Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the process of making your websites easy to find for your customers. On a regular basis, search engines (like Google) will “crawl” the Internet, looking for new and changed content to rank and insert into their search engine. Making sure your website is search engine friendly and has content which relates to the type of business you are looking for is key to increasing your search engine rankings.

What isn’t quite as important is how your site looks – visually.

I’m not suggesting that your website should look like a 3rd grader put it together as your design will certainly influence visitors opinion of your business. However, for purposes of optimizing your website for search engine rankings, you should create a website with plenty of text elements vs graphical elements for one simple reason: search engines don’t “see”.  They “read”.

Here’s a list of things that you should be considering when trying to effectively optimize your website:

  • Title tags – this is title of your page (the bar across the very top of your browser).  This tells a search engine what’s on the page.  You should NOT have the same title for every single page of your site.
  • Alt Tags – a search engine cannot “see” an image you put on your site or blog.  The Alt Tag tells the engine what the subject of the picture is.  These are also important for visually impaired users.
  • Keywords – for lack of a better description, this is what your website is about.  Make sure when you’re creating your content you’re using words that you want to rank for.  This sounds silly, but you’d be surprised how often its overlooked.
  • Content Frequency – there’s nothing worse than a “What’s New” section of a website that hasn’t been updated in 3-4 years.  It instantly tells people that the website is old, outdated and not worth looking at.  This is ESPECIALLY important if you want to delve into Social Media.
  • Specialized Content – talk about what you know.  You shouldn’t be talking a little bit about everything.  Stick to what you’re an “expert” at (or what you want people to perceive you an expert at).
